Race Engineer Insight – Why Bumpstop Gap Matters

Bump rubber gap defines how much suspension travel is available before the bump rubber starts to engage. Reducing the gap effectively increases the car’s heave stiffness at high load, limiting ride height drop under braking, cornering, and aerodynamic load. This can improve platform control and aero consistency, but if set too tight it can lead to loss of mechanical grip and harsh transient behaviour. Using accurately sized packers allows the bump rubber engagement point to be tuned precisely, giving a controlled transition into high-load support rather than an abrupt stop.
